The final home video frontier: The Next Generation on Blu-ray

Director Terence Young was once asked what the three main ingredients to Dr. No’s success were. The British filmmaker didn’t hesitate: “Sean Connery, Sean Connery, Sean Connery.”

When I think of Star Trek: The Next Generation, now spruced up on Blu-ray, my thoughts are much the same. “Patrick Stewart, Patrick Stewart, Patrick Stewart.”  Just when you begin to be distracted by the claustrophic sets, soap-opera acting, and sometimes trite moralizing, on comes Patrick Stewart, and you remember what makes the series so great.

Like several other British actors of his generation (most notably Anthony Hopkins), he is able to combine the emotional authenticity and immediacy of a Hoffman or De Niro with the crisp diction and mechanics of an Olivier. The stage-bred Yorkshireman was not an intuitive choice for the French captain Jean-Luc Picard, but he makes the role his own. Dispensing with any attempt at a Gallic accent, Stewart plays it straight, and is convincing even when the dialogue he must spout is less than scintillating. At every turn, he projects a humanity, intelligence, charm and class that makes the character one of the very finest in the Trek universe.MV5BMTc0MzU5ODQ5OF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwODIwODk1. V1. But perhaps I am not giving the show its proper due in focusing on its one strongest element only.  In fact, there is much to enjoy.  The show is always concerned with thought-provoking ideas, from the nature of the human experience to the puzzles of language (sometimes clumsily explored; the immensely imaginative creator Gene Roddenberry was never well-versed in subtlety). Moreover, Brent Spiner’s android character Data is paradoxically one of the show’s most relatable characters, seeking with each episode to understand and become more like his human crewmates. The recurring villains are well-developed and suitably threatening in unique ways – John De Lancie’s Q is playful, impish and often quite funny even as he menaces the Enterprise; the Borg are relentless, mechanistic and frightening in their threat to eliminate individuality.   Even Roddenberry’s decision to re-use the Star Trek: The Motion Picture theme, with its strident, perfectly pitched evocation of a starship reaching warp speed, enhances the atmosphere wonderfully.

These elements tend to overshadow the occasional black-hole of an episode (“Shades of Gray”, anyone?) and the inherent corniness of some of Trek‘s signature conceits (the Dust Buster ray guns, pajama uniforms, et cetera).

Some of the effects are dated by today’s standards, and the show has never had the same bright visual dazzle that the TNG films had.  Paramount has sought to rectify this by rebuilding each episode from the original film elements (transferred to video for original broadcast) and adding all-new computer effects.

The new Blu-ray sampler, an appetizer for the complete sets that Paramount plans to release, contains four episodes:  the two-part pilot “Encounter at Farpoint”; the emotionally-tinged, moving “Inner Light”; and the Worf-centric  “Sins of the Father.”

Ladies and Gentlemen, Its The Muppet Show!

The Muppets 2011 Movie Final Poster2 Ladies and Gentlemen, Its The Muppet Show!

Okay, okay so I’m late on this, I’m sorry! I was distracted getting caught up on my Muppets, since the movie came out last month.

Muppet Show Ladies and Gentlemen, Its The Muppet Show!Starting  of course with of course with the The Muppet Show.Which first aired on September 5, 1976 and aired it’s last episode in 1981 after 5 seasons. It was one of my favorite shows, even though I wasn’t born until 3 years after it went off the air. So to really do a proper post about the Muppets I should introduce some of the characters for those who don’t know them (Gasp)

Kermit the Frog, theater director and the shows host became an iconic figure of flailing, scrunched faces and a very gentle manner. His girlfriend (wife, whatever) Miss Piggy is the opposite of him, loud, rough and a total diva. (No wonder they’ve never managed to make it down the isle)

Then of course you’ve got Fozzie The Bear, Scooter, Gonzo (The Great) , The Swedish Chef, Rowlf The Dog, Dr. Honeydew and his assistant Beaker and so many more. There’s a wild cast of characters and it would be a long post to just list them all!

Over the 5  years that The Muppet Show was on the air the had guests stars that included Lena Horne, Phyllis Diller, Vincent Price, George Burns, John Cleese, Steve Martin, Gilda Radner,  Raquel Welch, Alice Cooper (Yes really!) , John Denver, Mark Hammal, Diana Ross, Roger Moore, Johnny Cash, Carol Burnett and many more. Each episode had one sometimes two guest stars who did songs, participated in skits and much more.

Muppet1 Ladies and Gentlemen, Its The Muppet Show!

In 1979 the Muppets left the small screen and made a movie the rather aptly titled The Muppet Movie about how the Muppets came together in the first place (approximately anyway). As with the t.v show the movie had a long list of stars, and guest cameos including Charles Durning, Milton Berle, Mel Brooks, Dom Deluise, Steve Martin, Orson Welles and many others.

Caper2 Ladies and Gentlemen, Its The Muppet Show!

In 1981 the Muppets reappeared on the big screen in The Great Muppet Caper which has Kermit and Fozzie playing twin reporters sent to investigate the theft of some jewels in England. It stars Diana Rigg, Jack Warden and John Cleese and Joan Sanderson have cameos

Muppets Manhattan Ladies and Gentlemen, Its The Muppet Show!

In 1984 the Muppets are graduating from college (Don’t ask it’s Muppet time) in The Muppets Take Manhattan. They’re trying to take their show to Broadway but when that doesn’t work out  the entire troupe has to take jobs all over the country spreading out from Ohio to Michigan and beyond. After a bunch of fumbles and foibles they manage to get their shot at Broadway.  After Kermit realizes what the show is missing and brings on more “frog and dogs and chickens and whatever” including characters from Sesame Street.

Muppet Treasure Island Ladies and Gentlemen, Its The Muppet Show!

Then there is a 12 year break of theater movies (There are several t.v specials) until 1996 and Muppet Treasure Island which is my personal favorite. It focuses on Jim Hawkins a young boy who wants to go to sea. With Gonzo and Rizzo at his side he joins Captain Abraham Smollet (Kermit the Frog) on the Hispaniola to find treasure! However Long John Silver (The utterly charming Tim Curry) has other plans. And after recently watching another version, and looking it up, it keeps the plot surprisingly close to the source, especially for a Muppet movie.

Muppet Space Ladies and Gentlemen, Its The Muppet Show!

In 1999 came Muppets In Space which focuses on Gonzo trying to discover who he is, and finding out that he is in fact an Alien from outer-space. This was the first Muppet movie since the death of Jim Henson and it shows a little, and despite being considered a flop in the theaters, it is a pretty good Muppet showing.

Muppets Oz Ladies and Gentlemen, Its The Muppet Show!

In 2005 there was a telefilm called The Muppets’ Wizard Of Oz which takes the Muppets and puts them in the standard Oz rolls. It was well received by kids and young adults.

And finally there is The Muppets the 2011, this was a great way to reintroduce the Muppets to a generation of kids that maybe don’t know about them with some shout outs to the older movies, so visit The Muppets at the Muppet Theater and on all their adventures!

Merry Christmas from the BBC!

doctorwhochristmas2 Merry Christmas from the BBC!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!  From Thanksgiving Day until the new year’s bells (or pots and pans) chime, the holiday season is officially in full swing.  Sure, there is plenty of hassle that mars this festive time: elbowing through bustling crowds of shoppers, agonizing over finding and being able to afford the perfect gift for so-and-so, having to endure certain family members who you would prefer to avoid…  We’ve all been there.  However, there’s plenty of joy to be found as well: classic Christmas songs on the radio, driving through neighborhoods full of blinking lights and inflatable Spongebob Santas, delicious homemade (or store-bought) cookies and other treats…  If all else fails, you can always drown your sorrows in some egg nog (I recommend Silk Nog with a splash of Johnny Walker Red)!  Anyway, one of my favorite things about this season is the wealth of holiday movies, specials, commercials, etc. all over TV and the internet.  I’ve got the newspaper listings tacked up to my refrigerator and my DVR is locked and loaded.  Like the classic song made famous in Bruce WillisArmageddon, I don’t want to miss a thing.  (Is it stuck in your head now too?  Yeah, you’re welcome.)  Recently I saw a delightful Christmas trailer courtesy of the BBC, which I will now share with you.  This is quite a star-studded affair, but what I am really interested in is Doctor Who‘s Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, decked out in gorgeous reindeer sweaters, playing Twister with a Cyberman! If this jaunty clip doesn’t get you in the Christmas spirit, I’m not sure what will.  And if you don’t already watch Doctor Who, may I suggest adding The Complete David Tennant Years to your wishlist?  Now there’s a gift you can enjoy year-round.

Total Animation

Something about heading towards the end of another year got me thinking about cartoon shows of the past, so I thought I’d share some of my favorite animated shows from over the years.

I’m going to start off with my top 5 favorites, these one all have a special meaning for me, I watched them almost religiously when they were originally on and I will watch them again and again.

Animaniacs 135x150 Total Animation

Animaniacs: There is really no way to really describe this show if you haven’t seen it. Yako, Wacko and Dot are the Warner siblings, though just what species they are is a mystery (Although dog and bunny are popular guesses.)  The best way to describe this show is as a collection of animated shorts starring a cast of recurring characters, and was the starting place of “Pinky And The Brain”.  I highly recommend it to everyone. Ever.

Daria 135x150 Total Animation

Daria: This was my favorite show when I was in high-school and I actually dressed as Daria for Halloween one year. (Wasn’t hard, I already wore boots everyday, and had glasses). What I love about this show are the quick one-liners and all the exaggerated high school stereotypes. It’s definitely worth checking out.

Fosters 135x150 Total Animation

Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends: What happens to imaginary friends when they’re no longer needed? Well they go to a foster home of course! They can live there, have fun and be cared for. The main character is Blooregard Q. Kazoo AKA Bloo who is the imaginary friend of Mac, who hangs out at Foster’s a lot  because he didn’t really want to give Bloo up. It’s funny, it’s cute and something about imaginary friends brings me right back to being a kid.

Ghostbusters 135x150 Total Animation

The Real Ghostbusters: I couldn’t possibly do a post about my favorite cartoons without including this show. The Real Ghosbusters was created, no surprise, to capitalize on the movie. It started in 1986 and ran until 1991. It keeps pretty close to the movie with the same set of characters, although they added Slimer as a good guy who can sort of talk. I loved this show, had VHS tapes of episodes (only 3 per tape!), and watched it constantly. I can still clearly remember plots, and even some dialogue from episodes.

Gargoyles 135x150 Total Animation

Gargoyles: Stone Gargoyles frozen in time for a thousand years in Scotland, wake to find themselves in the totally new world of New York City and have to fight old evil, as well as new plots to destroy them and the city. I watched this show before going to school every morning, the stories where great, the characters were people you’d actually cared about and it had some great voice actors over the years including Jonathan Frakes as the voice of the main villian, and Marina Sirtis as Demona. . It’s definitely worth a watch if you haven’t seen it, and a re-watch if you have.

Those are my top 5 favorites, but you should check out these totally awesome animated shows too!

  1. Ducktales
  2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
  3. Johnny Bravo
  4. Dr. Katz
  5. Darkwing Duck

Team Video’s Take On Who Should’ve Been Nominated For An Emmy

5.1 Team Videos Take On Who Shouldve Been Nominated For An Emmy

Allan and I sat down to discuss who we thought should’ve been nominated for an Emmy this year, and it turns out that we both have mad love for Community, Parks & Recreation and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. If you don’t share the same enthusiasm for these shows as we do, that’s totally okay, but listen to the podcast and hear us out on it – we have reasons!

You can also download the podcast here or listen to it in iTunes.

Do you agree or disagree with us? Who do you think should’ve been nominated for an Emmy? Leave your answers in the comments!

The TARDIS Is Waiting…

As my fellow Whovians already know, BBC America will be airing the mid-season premiere of Doctor Who this Saturday at 9pm Eastern. Judging by the title – “Let’s Kill Hitler” – Lt. Aldo Raine and his Basterds aren’t the only ones in the business of messing around with Nazis. Unfortunately my enjoyment of this episode will be delayed as I am still relatively new to the magic that is the Doctor. Up until a few months ago, I had very little knowledge of the show when repeated mentions by two of my favorite podcasts – Horroretc and Nerdist – led me to finally sit down and start with Series 1. Needless to say, I was done for at the start, immediately drawn into this world of time travel and adventure. Currently at the beginning of Series 4, I have been ardently watching the episodes in order to catch up and watch the new series in real time. I am honestly a bit anxious to say goodbye to the 10th Doctor, the endlessly brilliant David Tennant. Although I liked Christopher Eccleston quite a bit (you never forget your first Doctor), I’ve become strongly attached to Tennant and am wary of his regeneration into Matt Smith (who I have admittedly heard lovely things about). In any case, enjoy the trailer below (which I am still avoiding due to spoilers) and if you haven’t started watching Doctor Who – you need to start now. Seriously. I’m sorry, but there is no way anything you are currently watching is even half as good. Start with Series 1 and if you aren’t hooked by “Father’s Day” then we should probably not be friends anymore.

4 Episodes Left! (Spoiler Alert)

Unlike most people I was a late bloomer with True Blood but I am completely caught up now. So yes, I wanted Sookie and Bill to stay together but on the other hand Eric was so mysterious and I wanted to know about him too. Before I watched “Spellbound” this past week so many of the episodes were just perfect. I was happy and enjoying the romance between Sookie and Eric. I felt bad for Bill though because he does want Sookie to be happy although we are not clear on exactly what he is thinking.

sookiebilleric 4 Episodes Left! (Spoiler Alert)

So, this “Spellbound” episode… We are treated to more romance and then Sookie and Eric standing by Bill but now we are left to worry about numerous things. First of all will Marnie/Antonia get some better clothes or maybe use some make-up or hair product? Secondly will Sookie be ok from the wound she received and Alcide have to break up with his trashy chick over this? I feel Alcide and Sookie are more of a brother/sister relationship then a lover one. Will Lafayette get caught with the baby? Last- what is Marnie going to do with Eric now? I hate having to wait but there are so many cliff hangers this past week and there are only 4 episodes left! Thankfully True Blood Season 5 was green lighted already. Below is next week’s preview.

This Is What I Thought FX’s Terriers Was Going To Be

I don’t know about everyone else, but when I heard that FX was going to premiere a weird show about a dog with Elijah Wood, I assumed it was going to be Terriers, the show that, at the time, was being promoted heavily on FX.

Why would I think this?  Here are the facts I had: it was going to be a weird sitcom about a guy and a dog.

Here is one of the promos that FX was running at the time:

http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/v/BsGB6wszAbc?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0

I kept thinking to myself, “Maybe Elijah Wood is the dog…that is a Jack Russell Terrier, correct?”

It wasn’t until I saw the longer promos for Terriers that I found out that it was not the show I thought it was.  And don’t get me wrong, I love Donal Logue, but I was really intrigued by the short promos FX was playing and was convinced that Elijah Wood was going to be voicing a gun-toting/dragging Jack Russell Terrier.

I was quite wrong.

But today, I read an article on Ain’t It Cool News about the real show that Elijah Wood is going to be on for FX.  Apparently, the show will be called Wilfred, and it is based on an Australian sitcom of the same name.  Wilfred is about a man who is dating this hot woman who has a dog named…Wilfred.  And while everyone else in the world sees Wilfred as a regular dog, the man, Adam (in the Australian version), sees Wilfred as a man (played by Jason Gann) who is dressed in a dog suit.  Jason Gann will be reprising the role of the American Wilfred, with Elijah Wood taking on the role of Adam.  Fiona Gublemann will be the hot neighbor girl.

All in all, that sounds pretty awesome.

Here is a short clip from the Australian version if you don’t believe me:

Top Ten Episodes: It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Seasons 1 – 5

It seems like just yesterday a show about a group of friends and their bar in Philadelphia starring four relatively unknowns premiered after the more buzzed about eating disorder comedy Starved on FX.  And yet here we are, five seasons deep with the sixth season in full swing, and who can even remember the names of those fatties and upchuckers?  Here’s are my picks for the ten best episodes, feel free to comment with your own list.

10.  The Nightman Cometh
While some may rank this episode a lot higher than number 10, I feel like it doesn’t follow the form of a traditional Sunny episode, and while I certainly encourage experimentation (Especially sexually…Ladies?)  the lack of a traditional structure I feel keeps them from hitting the right notes that make other episodes so painfully hilarious.  Still, it’s a true original, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t include it.  Plus, it spawned its own live stage show, which I have yet to be fortunate enough to catch in person (It’s featured on the extras of the Season 4 DVD).

9.  The D.E.N.N.I.S. System
While it’s been common knowledge since the start that Dennis is considered the ladies man of the group, we’ve only seen glimpses of his process (see “The Gang Finds A Dead Guy” and “The Gang Dances Their Asses Off”).  The methods to Dennis’ madness are finally broken down in “The D.E.N.N.I.S. System.”  Say it with me now, people: Demonstrate value; Engage physically; Nurture dependence; Neglect emotionally; Inspire hope; Separate entirely.  If that seems like too much work for you, there’s always the M.A.C. System (Move in after copulation) or emulate the feeding strategy of Dr. Mantis Tobagin.

8.  Underage Drinking: A National Concern
From the start, one of the strengths of Sunny has been the writers’ ability to give equal story time and quality to each of the four (five starting in season 2) main characters.  “Underage Drinking: A National Concern” is the first episode where this is achieved with near perfection, as we see both Dee and Dennis dealing with underage romance, Charlie reliving the glory days he never actually experienced, and Mac coming to terms with the fact that he might be an asshole.  As Charlie would say, this is classic Sunny.

7.  Dennis And Dee’s Mom Is Dead
One of Sunny’s longest unanswered questions is finally addressed in “Dennis And Dee’s Mom Is Dead,” which is: Do these guys have any other friends?  The answer is of course a very obvious no.  From handing out penis-shaped party fliers to pulling Jackass-style pranks on unsuspecting freshman, the episode takes a very weird turn when Charlie befriends an immigrant drifter named Ernesto and the two bond over the heartbreak that is Dee’s high school diary.  The return of Bruce Mathis and Dee and Frank’s closest flirtation with emotional incest make this one of the most balanced episodes of the series.

6.  Charlie Goes America All Over Everybody’s Ass
“Rock, flag and eagle!” is all you need to say to sum up this episode’s greatness.  And as if Charlie’s methed-up take on Lee Greenwood wasn’t enough, Mac, Dennis and Frank attempt to turn the bar in a freewheeling den of freedom, much like the bars in New Orleans.  We get one of our first glimpses into Dennis’ sexual psyche (“We don’t want wild girls.  We want good girls gone wild.”), and appearances by the McPoyle’s and Artemis.

http://www.hulu.com/embed/xwef5r4yfJXgIi6M2XmwyA

5.  The Gang Solves The Gas Crisis
Meta humor is always a gamble, but it pays off here when Mac, Dennis and Charlie finding themselves exploring the dynamics of their own “crew,” comparing themselves to Scooby Doo, The A Team, and the Ghostbusters at various points throughout the episode.  Along the way Mac’s constant bossiness is challenged, Frank waterboards Dee, and Charlie finds his purpose in life:  Wildcard, bitches!

http://www.hulu.com/embed/wX8x1SuwAx9I6wz2MPupzg

4.  The Gang Hits The Road
From the moment we learn that Mac, Dennis, Charlie and Frank are planning a road trip to the Grand Canyon, it should be obvious to any longtime viewer that (SPOILER ALERT) they’re not even gonna make out of Philly, much less 2,000 miles across the country. The constant starting and stopping in the gang’s quest to hit the road serves as the perfect metaphor for their lives, and we get a rare glimpse at Charlie and Dennis actually bonding, a rare occurrence since the strain on their friendship caused by Dennis banging the Waitress.

 http://www.hulu.com/embed/P39KTGd1RkXdheZ9kRE-Jg

3.  Mac and Charlie Die: Parts 1 & 2
It may be cheating to include two episodes as one, but one just doesn’t work without the other (and they both aired on the same day).  After Mac’s dad is released from prison, Mac and Charlie decide the only logical way to stop him from killing them is to fake their own deaths.  These two episodes are packed with so many classic Sunny moments that it’s amazing that they’re all contained in only two episodes:  The orgy, the “Blaze of Glory” suicide tape, the homoerotic “Blaze of Glory” memorial tape, Charlie’s constant loss of teeth, poppers, the duster, the glory hole, and of course Keir O’Donnell as Dennis’ European roomate Jan, a character we can only hope will return one day for more Perfect Strangers-esque sexcapades.

2.  Charlie Got Molested
While every season one episode showcased the creator’s eagerness to tackle traditionally taboo subject matter, no topic is more taboo than molestation.  The first season of Curb Your Enthusiasm ended their first season on the subject, and with so many parallels that can be drawn between the two series (whimsical musical interludes; somewhat unlikeable protagonists; Kaitlin Olson), it only seems fitting that Sunny ended their first season the same way.  “Charlie Got Molested” also introduced us to series favorites Ryan and Liam McPoyle, played with devious perfection by Nate Mooney and Jimmi Simpson, respectively, and brilliantly cast Saved By The Bell’s Dennis Haskins as the (wrongfully accused) molester in question.

http://www.hulu.com/embed/yPqC9GlnsQIXB97fHp1xFw

1.  Mac Bangs Dennis’ Mom
Motherf@#ker.  There’s really nothing worse you can call a person.  I mean, what kind of person (other than your father), would f@#k your mother?  Mac would.  Dennis would.  Charlie would exploit the copulation for his own gains.  Dee would go along for the ride just to get out of hard labor (aka “Charlie work”).  A perfect storm of backstabbings, betrayals, and both figurative and literal screwing, nothing sums up this episode better than the lone tear that runs down Charlie’s cheek just before the credits roll.
